What an un-put-downable book! If you’re in the mood for an emotional story with a loveable main character then do not pass this one up.
The cover art and description promoted McFarlane’s novel as a rom-com, but it was so much more. Think Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, if you’ve been blessed enough to read it. These days I see the cartoonish, bright-coloured cover and instantly categorize it as romance. However, Just Last Night soared way past my expectations. There was a hint of romantic interest for Eve Harris, veering in the triangular direction, but strap in for a deep rollercoaster of overcoming grief and inadequacy through the effervecent British humour of an endearing cast of characters.
Eve is 34, stuck in the mundane, and it was incredibly easy to emphasize with her in my own late-twenties. I was hooked throughout her whole journey of undervaluing her self-worth to following an old man with dementia to Edinburgh. My one piece of advice, don’t sleep on Finlay!
I got this book from the library, as I do with most authors I’m new to reading, but I think I’ll have to carve some room for McFarlane on my bookshelf.
